Women Outnumber Men in US Law Firms, 2023 Survey Finds

In 2023, the law firm corridors echoed with the confident strides of women associates. For the first time, they took the lead, outnumbering male associates at U.S. law firms. It's not just a whisper or a rumor. It's inked clearly in the data that our dear National Association for Law Placement (NALP) put out on Tuesday.

Ladies Take the Lead, Was This Expected?

Women have been lining up at the law school gates for a while now. They outnumbered men eight years ago, and they've been widening the gap. 56% of J.D. students parked at American Bar Association-accredited law schools wear heels.

In '91, when NALP first started keeping tabs on diversity data, female associates were just over 38%. From there, it took them 32 years to edge past halfway. As NALP's executive director, Nikia Gray, said, "Real change is slow, hard, and imperceptible, but it does happen."

Making Strides: But Is It Enough?

Next, let's look at those in the power chairs. Female representation among law firm partners saw an uptick, too. They made up 27.76% of all partners in 2023. Not as many as we'd like, but it's a start. There's a gap between the percentage of women associates and partners. We can chalk that up for all sorts of reasons - from bias and lack of inclusion to uneven demands of caregiving.

Let's remember our friends of color. Their representation could be better, too. It climbed to 30.15% in the associate's bracket, while non-white partners rose to 12.1%. But here's a wrinkle - less than 5% of all partners are women of color.

However, for the first time, Black and Latina women accounted for over 1% of partners in 2023. That's worth a fist bump.

Is the Diversity Trend Slowing Down?

The percentage of minority students in summer associate internships saw a dip for the first time since 2017, slipping down by 0.75 points to 42.27%. Could this signal a slowdown in the diversity shift among associates? After all, these summer programs are the gateways to full-time law gigs.
