There are a number of reasons why someone might have to undergo surgery. One of the most common reasons is the development of a hernia. For those who might not know, a hernia occurs when an organ or tissue protrudes through a muscular wall that is typically meant to enclose it. When someone goes to the operating room, a trained surgeon may use something called hernia mesh to reinforce the repair. The point of hernia mesh is to reinforce muscular tissues that might otherwise tear, leading to a subsequent hernia. Sadly, there are a number of issues that are developing with hernia mesh.

One of the most common issues that is arising with hernia mesh is the development of chronic pain. Hernia mesh can lead to chronic pain because it may damage nerves that are present in and around the site of the repair. Some people describe a pressure-like sensation while others might feel shock-like sensations that travel throughout their body. Regardless, this pain can be incredibly frustrating, particularly since most types of hernia mesh are meant to be left in place for life. Many individuals who develop chronic pain from hernia mesh say that the pain gets worse with movement. In some cases, people end up dependent on opioid and narcotic medications for pain control, which is dangerous.

Next, hernia mesh also has the ability to impact a woman's ability to bear children. One of the most common locations for a hernia to develop is in the abdomen. Depending on the exact location of the hernia mesh, it might end up cutting into a woman's uterus or fallopian tubes. This can have drastic impacts on future pregnancies. Because many women who end up with a hernia want to bear children later in life, this is a serious complication. Sadly, many of the complications stemming from hernia mesh end up being present for life.

Finally, hernia mesh can also lead to serious digestive issues. Some of these might even be life-threatening. Hernia mesh is hard and abrasive. It has been designed this way to provide plenty of structural support to any hernia that might have been repaired. As a result, its structure can also end up damaging the intestines. In some cases, it might even poke a hole in the intestines themselves. This is called an enterotomy. If an enterotomy occurs, this can cause fecal matter to leak throughout the abdominal cavity. This can lead to shock and sepsis, which are medical emergencies. It is important for everyone to make sure they report any potential side effects of hernia mesh to the doctor right away.

These are only a few of the many complications that might develop following the insertion of hernia mesh. While most people will live with hernia mesh pain-free for the rest of their lives, there are still serious issues that can develop. It is important for everyone to know that they are not alone. There are trained professionals who are willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
