Criminal cases are often some of the toughest to defend, and it's even worse when the defendant is doing the prosecution's job. Many defendants come in completely uneducated about the process and might not know what they should and shouldn't do. They also don't realize how serious the consequences of one seemingly simple action could have on their case or sentence. Let's take a look at some of the worst mistakes you could commit during a criminal defence case.

Choosing the Wrong Team

This is the first and worst mistake that you can make. If you want to get a chance at beating your case or want to make sure that you get fair sentencing, you have to make sure that you have the right team in your corner. There's a very high chance that you get a plea deal, and if you have someone who doesn't care about you, they might drive you right into a brick wall.

You want someone who has years defending these kinds of cases and has a verifiable record to back it up. Edelson Law Criminal Defence Lawyers are a prime example. Firms like these have been involved in cases big and small and have a true dedication to defending their clients' rights. You don't want to be another number or not get the same level of effort because you're not as high profile a client. You want a team with a solid reputation both in and out of court.

Being too Chatty Online

Any good lawyer will advise you to completely shut down your social media during your proceedings. That's because anything you reveal there can be used in a court of law. And, if your case is serious, you better believe that the other side is watching and making sure that they can get any piece of evidence they can on you.

This also goes for groups and forums. You cannot expect anything you post online to be protected and off-limits. Anything you post, especially things that could incriminate you, can be used against you, so be careful. If you can't shut down your social media accounts for some reason, at least make sure that you put your security settings to maximum, not accept any new friend requests, and keep public communications to a minimum.

Not Showing the Court the Respect it Deserves

This is one of the worst mistakes you can make, but one you can easily avoid as well. If you don't show up on time at your court hearing and aren't dressed appropriately, the judge might think that you're not taking your case seriously. So, you must be properly dressed, either in business attire or conservatively. You also need someone that will help you polish your image.

These are just some of the mistakes that could end up hurting your criminal defence case. Make sure to avoid these at all costs, and make sure that you consult the right people so you can get the representation you deserve.
