As a business, it's customary to work hard to obtain and keep your customers whilst attracting as many new ones as possible. Yet, what many business owners fail to recognise is the importance of retaining and attracting current and potential new employees to their business. It's safe to say that without a strong workforce, your company would probably struggle, which is why it's never been so important to prioritise your personnel.

Good salaries and being paid at the end of the month, with the additional lure of bonuses - these are always good motivators to come to work every day and do what you've been employed to do. However, these days company benefits and incentives are just as important to employees as their wage. That feeling of being appreciated and respected whilst at work is usually all it takes for an employee to consider moving on or staying with you.

Here we'll take a look at some simple employee incentive ideas that you've probably never thought of.

EMI Schemes

An EMI (Enterprise Management Incentives) scheme is an approved share option scheme for your employees. It allows them to invest in the company they work for. When employees are given the chance to obtain shares within the company, it means you're all on the same page and have the same goal - the success of your company. It's a great way to incentivise employees and helps you retain them too.

Give them the best equipment

Faulty printers, slow computers, bad chairs and unreliable software - if the equipment your employees are using is lagging behind, then you can expect their enthusiasm about their work to go the same way. This doesn't mean you have to break the bank and get everyone the very latest in technology, just ensure that everything works efficiently, and that these items aren't hindering the productivity of your staff. You can incentivise staff by asking them to speak up if something needs replacing or to inform you if there is something they need that would make their working life easier.

Celebrate them

If someone has closed a really good deal, or they've managed to smash through an intense workload before a tight deadline, then celebrate these achievements. Buy the office lunch or breakfast, treat everyone to a bottle of wine and make sure they know that it's thanks to that specific employee.

Give them longer lunch breaks

If your employees often feel restricted by their 30-minute lunch break, give them one day a week when it's an hour. Let them decide when this happens and make it a monthly occurrence.

Let them work from home

Many of us spend more time at work than we do with our families, so why not incentivize your work staff by letting them work flexibly between home and the office? If you often have members of staff off work due to issues with childcare, sickness, or sudden school closures then giving them this flexibility means that productivity will still be high.

And finally, say thank you!

Knowing that your work is appreciated and that you're not just a number can be enough to change the attitude of any disgruntled employee. Take time to learn people's names and say thank you!
