Republican senators Tom Cotton of Arkansas and David Perdue of Georgia have proposed a bill to curb legal immigration by half. They argued the arrival of immigrant with low-skilled labor has contributed to the declining wages received by Americans .

Sens. Cotton and Perdue officially proposed the bill Tuesday, Feb. 7, as reported by CNN. The bill is introduced to reduce the number of immigrant from one million to 500,000 annually. The reason for this bill is because the current amount of legal immigration is full of low-skilled labor, which according to the senators contribute to the declining wages of high school diplomas Americans.

"It's pulling the rug out from underneath them,” The senators said in the press conference to introduce the bill. The proposed bill will assure the underclass Americans will be able to pursue their dream according to Sens. Cotton and Perdue. Cotton said the bill is proposed to stop the competition for the lower wages Americans with high school diplomas or less against the low-skilled immigrants in the job market.

The legislation did not address the visas tied to employment like H-1B visas for skilled workers, according to Reuters. Such visas are commonly used by technology companies.

Both senators admitted they have talked about the proposed bill to President Trump who had promised to make immigration issue as one of his main focus. However, the new bill will have a major uphill to pass the Senate and Congress, even from the Republicans. Many of the GOP senators and congressmen prefer to have a reconstructive reform instead of the crackdown.

For years, the philosophical point of view behind U.S. immigration policy is about keeping family together. This new bill will eliminate some of those view, which according to Democrat senator Jeanne Shaheen as wrong and senseles to separate families with the bill.
